This is a review of the TTArtisan AF 27mm f2.8 prime lens for the Sony E-Mount.  This TTArtisans F 27mm f2.8 lens is also available for the Fuji X-Mount and Nikon cameras.  I will cover everything you need to learn about the TTArtisans AF 27mm f2.8 for video and photography purposes.  You can buy my ex-demo TTArtisan Lens from my webstore.

This E Mount lens is an APS-C/Super-35mm Lens but can be used on full-frame Sony cameras that support the APS-C crop or clear image zoom function.

About the TTArtisan 27mm Prime Lens

The TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 Lens is a compact, fast prime lens designed for Sony E-mount cameras, but it also is available for the Fuji X-Mount and Nikon Z-Mount.  The lens features a manual focus design and offers a wide aperture of f/2.8, allowing for shallow field depth and excellent low-light performance.  Here is a detailed review of the TTArtisan 27mm prime lens.

The 27mm field of view is a 40mm full-frame equivalent, allowing you to get a wider field of view than your standard 50mm.  I found this very useful for shooting outdoors in most scenarios except landscape photography or scene-establishing shots when filming video.

Build Quality and Design

The TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 lens is well-built and feels solid in hand.   The rear element is metal which is a welcomed addition to the all-metal design.  While the focus ring is smooth, it’s a little scratchy (see video). However, the feel of the ring is well-damped, making it easy to achieve focus manually for shooting products or landscapes.

The aperture ring clicks smoothly through its range of f-stops.  The lens also comes with a plastic lens hood and rear lens cap.

The rear lens cap is also plastic, but it features a USB-C port that allows you to install firmware updates as they become available from TTartisan.  This is a unique and great feature to have built directly into the rear lens cap.

Optical Performance

The TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 lens offers excellent optical performance, especially for its price.  The lens produces sharp images even wide open at f/2.8, with a good amount of background blur. In addition, the lens exhibits minimal distortion, and the bokeh is smooth and creamy.

Bokeh

Background blur and Bokeh is a mixed bag.  The lens produces quite a busy bokeh at a close distance from your subject. However, this improves if you move back a bit or stop down.  This 27mm E-Mount TTArtisan lens has what I would call a retro look.  You’ll either like this or you won’t, but I find it fun and interesting to use.

Autofocus and Manual Focus

The TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 lens supports both Autofocus and Manual Focus.  The autofocus works well for video if you are not far back in the frame.  Paired with my Sony FX30, the TTartisan 27mm f2.8 had full access to eye tracking and the rest of the autofocus features.

This works great for talk-to-camera shots at a desk or outdoors in the field (see my video).

I did notice the autofocus did struggle when trying to work near the minimum lens focus. But, overall, it worked well enough for more videos that I will shoot in the future.

Compatibility

The TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 lens is designed for Sony E-mount cameras.  This means it can work natively with APS-C cameras and Full-Frame E-Mount cameras.  If you put this on a Full Frame camera, use clear image zoom or the APS-C mode to avoid serious vignetting.

Price

One of the biggest advantages of the TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8lens is its price.  It is relatively affordable for a fast prime lens, making it an attractive option for photographers on a budget.  Considering its optical performance and build quality, the lens offers excellent value for money.

Conclusion

The TTArtisan E Mount 27mm f/2.8 lens is a well-built, fast prime lens that offers excellent optical performance at an affordable price.  While it may not be suitable for all photographers, it is a great choice for those who enjoy an autofocus lens and want a compact, portable lens that produces sharp images with unique and interesting bokeh.

Despite minor issues with the lens’s minimum focusing distance, handling, and unique flaring, the TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 lens offers excellent value for money. It is worth considering an affordable, fast prime lens.  This is a great lens for filmmakers or content creators on a budget.  Photographers will appreciate the smaller form factor and sharpness between f4-f5.6.
